How to add an E-Mail Address to Your Domain.:

1) Log into Plesk as Your Client Name or Your Domain Name.

2) If Logged on as Client click on the Domain Name for the new email. If you Logged on as The Domain Name skip to 3).

3) Now that you are in the Domain screen, Click on Mail, under Services section.

4) Now in the Mail Names, Click on Add New Mail Name

5) Here is where the possible set ups of an email address diverse quit a bit.

Standard Email Setup: Enter the Mail name & Password under the Mail name form section of the page.  The don't do anything (unless you read the manual too) under the Control panel access section. Finally, in the Mailbox section, choose if you just want the mailbox to use as much of your allotted domain space that it needs (this is suggested if its your own mail name).  Also just below is a check box to turn on Spam Assassin, which is a Spam filter that is set up in a separate section once the main name is set up.  Click OK and your mail name is set.

6) Forwarding and Aliases :  This seems to be the most confusing concept in the mail section of the control panel.  There are 2 kinds of email forwarding under Plesk:

Aliases are within the same domain (i.e. two@domain.com forwards to one@domain.com , This is an alias. In other words any email sent to two@domain.com will be sent to one@domain.com and there is no such real mailbox as two@domain.com.

Redirects: These are forwarded from one domain to another! NOT the same domain! Here bob@domainone.com forwards or redirects to bill@domaintwo.com. Hence, any mail sent to bob@domainone.com will be sent on ALSO to bill@domaintwo.com. PLEASE NOTE THE FACT it's ALSO sent to bill@domaintwo.com.

Ok already!! What's the big big deal about this ALSO sent to stuff??  It is a big deal, because with a Redirect forward a copy of the message is ALSO left in the original mailbox. This is really really bad if you don't get this concept.  Again, when using the REDIRECT forwarding a copy of the original message is ALSO left in the original mailbox.  Seem dumb? I agree, be hey, I didn't write Plesk. But there is a simple way around this and some people find reasons to actually use it this way, go figure...

Here is all you do! If you set up a domain to domain redirect just click on that mail name from that mail name's screen (you should be there now).  Just click on the Mailbox Icon and uncheck the Mailbox check mark. This turns off the first mailbox, but indeed the mail is still REDIRECTED to the second domain's mail box!

Yeap, there are other things you can do with an email address. You can set up a mail group, set up an auto responder, and other combinations of tricks between functions. One thing to note is if you use an auto responder you can do a redirect forward from within that function and don't need to set up a separate redirect in the redirect section.

7) Logging into Plesk as Mail Name: You can log into Plesk as a Mail Name. Just use your full email address (aliases won't work) and the password for that email and you can log into Plesk as just that Mail Name.  This is handy if you give a family member or consignment shop, etc its own email address.  They can use their Spam filter, manage redirects, change their password, set up Auto Responders themselves.

One Final Concept on Plesk Email: On your main main Mail screen you probably saw a Preferences.  If you got curious and looked there you saw I had Mail to nonexistent user go to black_hole@secure-ss.com. Why? Well first any mail that goes to black_hole@secure-ss.com gets dumped in the bit bucket forever lost on purpose. Ok why again? Two reasons because the way spammers operate. First they send out Spam to commonly used email addresses, like admin@domain.com, webmaster@domain.com, sales@domain.com, links@domain.com and dozens more in their list.  They even guess at other common names like bob@domain.com, sally@domain.com, sally01@, sally02 and so on and so on.  They do it for 2 reasons. First they figure they will get lucky and match one of your real names. Second they look at what bounces and know those are bad names and take them off their list. But know what? If they see some bounce and other's not bounce guess what? They add the ones that didn't bounce to their list of good names!  So if I were you, I would not bounce, reject or any thing like that. Send nonexistent user emails to the bit bucket I call black_hole@secure-ss.com
